Oil paintings are tougher than they look, but modern homes — bright, dry and warm — ask for a few conservator-approved habits.
Hang away from direct sun and radiators; ultraviolet light fades pigments and heat cracks varnish. Keep relative humidity between 40 and 60 percent, and never hang oils in bathrooms. Dust frames with a soft dry brush — never spray cleaner near the surface.
Check the back yearly for warping or insect dust, and have valuable works appraised every few years. When varnish yellows or paint lifts, call a conservator early: small interventions stay small only when they are prompt.
Key takeaways
1. Use UV-filtering glass for works on paper.
2. Hang at eye level, away from heat sources.
3. Insure scheduled works separately from contents cover.
